Cute and practical DIY decoration for your newborn’s car seat: a cosy Maxi-Cosi swaddle blanket and a playful fabric bunting garland – perfect for beginners and leftover fabrics.

In this article, you’ll learn how to sew a swaddle blanket for a baby car seat / Maxi-Cosi and a matching fabric bunting garland from muslin – a simple DIY idea that keeps your baby warm and makes the car seat feel softer, cosier and more personal.
Why I Made a Swaddle Blanket for Our Baby Car Seat
While we were preparing for the birth of our son, our ordered car seat arrived together with the stroller (ours is from Kinderkraft). Practical, neutral… and, to be honest, a little boring. To me, the “bare” seat felt neither cosy nor inviting. For my baby, I wished for something truly snuggly – and for myself, something a little more beautiful to look at.
During my maternity leave I had plenty of time and had just started sewing. Alongside cushion covers, the whole baby layette – baby trousers, hats, wrap jackets, baby sleeping bag, pillows for the bassinet, hooded towels – became my first sewing projects.
All of these baby sewing projects are wonderful for beginners – just like this swaddle blanket for a baby car seat and the little bunting garland.
Swaddle Blanket for the Baby Car Seat: Pattern and Fabrics
Pattern for the baby car seat blanket
You can find a detailed sewing pattern and tutorial for a baby car seat swaddle blanket here on Bastelrado – this is the pattern I used, and I found it very helpful and well explained.
With it, you can sew a swaddle blanket designed for an infant car seat / Maxi-Cosi that wraps your baby from head to toe.
Fabrics I used
For my car seat blanket I chose:
a soft, sage green muslin fabric with dots for the outside
a matching fleece fabric for the inner lining
This combination gives you:
outside: light, pretty and breathable
inside: warm, cosy and gentle on the skin
Especially for winter babies, this mix of muslin + fleece works beautifully – not too stiff, but warm and comforting.
Bunting Garland for the Baby Car Seat: Using Up Fabric Scraps
The bunting garland is a wonderful way to use up fabric scraps from other projects – even very small pieces that might otherwise just sit in your leftover box.
I chose several muslin fabrics in coordinating colours and patterns, including the muslin I used for the blanket, and sewed them to a black bias tape.
On the blog you’ll also find a detailed step-by-step sewing tutorial for a fabric bunting garland, where I show you exactly how to sew little triangles from fabric scraps and attach them to a band.
Why I Love Bunting Garlands So Much
If you’ve been here for a while, you probably know that I love garlands of all kinds – like this pretty boho feather garland – and I have a special soft spot for bunting garlands.
They’re not only decorative for the baby car seat, but also:
a beautiful gift for a new baby,
cheerful decoration in the children’s room,
a little colour accent in the living room or above the bed (for example over a house bed like the one from Monlitcabane),
a delicate decoration in the garden (here you'll find a simple and quick version of the bunting garland),
or a simple party decoration.
They also look lovely over the changing table (you can find inspiration for styling your changing area in my Ikea organiser hack).
Your imagination can run completely free here. In any case, bunting garlands never fail to have a positive effect in my eyes. With simple means, they create atmosphere and a little splash of colour.
Materials: What You Need for the Blanket & Bunting
If you’d like to decorate your baby’s car seat and make it cosy, here’s what you’ll need.
For the Maxi-Cosi swaddle blanket
muslin fabric with dots or a gentle pattern as the outer fabric
fleece fabric for the inner lining
matching sewing thread
a pattern for a baby car seat swaddle blanket, for example from Bastelrado
For the bunting garland
various muslin fabrics in different colours and patterns (perfect for using up scraps)
bias tape in a matching colour
matching sewing thread
You’ll also need a sewing machine, fabric scissors and sewing clips or pins – a basic sewing kit that you probably already have and that will serve you well for many future sewing projects.

Winter and Summer Versions: Adjusting the Car Seat Blanket
The pattern is ideal for the early months with a newborn. Our baby was a winter baby, so for the first version I chose a warm, cosy fleece fabric.
After a few months:
the foot section became too short for the ever-growing legs,
and the thick fabric became too warm as spring arrived.
So I decided to sew a summer version of the car seat blanket for a slightly bigger baby:
with cotton fabric on the outside
and muslin as the inner layer
Of course, a matching bunting garland sewn from the leftover fabrics moved back onto the car seat with us.

For this size-adjusted swaddle blanket you simply choose slightly longer measurements for the foot part and the hood so that your child fits in comfortably (in the photos you can clearly see the difference compared to the original pattern).
Our second blanket served us well throughout the entire first year in the car seat (until we changed to a bigger seat) and made many car journeys much cosier. As the months went by, my son also found the bunting garland more and more interesting – a quiet little source of entertainment on the road.

Frequently Asked Questions About Baby Car Seat Swaddle Blankets
Is a swaddle blanket for the baby car seat really necessary?
A swaddle blanket for the baby car seat can be very useful – especially in the first months when you often carry your baby in the infant car seat or Maxi-Cosi. Instead of dressing your baby in a thick jacket (which is often not recommended in the car seat for safety reasons), your baby lies in a soft blanket that you can wrap around them like a little cocoon.
The big advantage: You can easily open or close the blanket in the car depending on the temperature – without constantly dressing and undressing your baby.
How long can you use a swaddle blanket for the infant car seat?
How long you use a swaddle blanket for the infant car seat mainly depends on:
your baby’s size,
and the size and cut of the blanket.
Generally, a car seat swaddle blanket is used through the newborn phase and the first months, as long as your baby is in the infant car seat or Maxi-Cosi. Many blankets fit roughly until clothing size 68/74 – around 6–9 months, depending on your baby’s build.
What always matters:
the car seat harness must run freely and correctly,
the blanket should not lie between your baby and the harness,
and your baby shouldn’t be “overpacked”.
When in doubt, trust your intuition, check regularly how warm your baby really feels – and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your car seat.
What are the advantages of a dedicated car seat blanket for babies?
A special baby car seat blanket offers several advantages:
Less dressing and undressing: You can calmly strap your baby into the seat at home and then wrap the blanket around them. Outside or in a warm car, you simply fold it open again.
More sense of security: Many babies feel like they are in a cosy little nest inside a swaddle blanket – the soft wrapping can be calming when you are on the go.
No “puffy jacket problem” in the car seat: Thick jackets can be unsafe under car seat straps. A swaddle blanket lies over your baby and can be opened and closed as needed.
A personal touch: When you sew the baby car seat blanket yourself, you can choose fabrics, colours and patterns that fit your family – making the car seat more individual and homely.
Which materials are best for baby car seat blankets?
For a baby car seat blanket, it’s best to choose soft, breathable fabrics that keep your baby warm without trapping too much heat:
muslin (for example double or triple-layered): light, soft and temperature-regulating
cotton fleece or sweat fabric: thicker, extra cosy
cotton fabrics as outer layer, possibly with a light interlining
The most important things:
better to use several thinner layers than one very thick, stiff one
fabrics that are easy to wash
materials that feel soft and pleasant on your baby’s skin
Directly on the skin, cotton or muslin is usually most comfortable; synthetic fabrics can work well as a middle layer.
What is the difference between a normal baby blanket and a car seat swaddle blanket?
A normal baby blanket is usually rectangular or square and not shaped to fit a car seat. It can work wonderfully in everyday life, but in the car seat it tends to slip, cover straps or buckles and doesn’t always stay where it should.
A car seat swaddle blanket, on the other hand:
is shaped to fit the infant car seat / Maxi-Cosi,
leaves space for the harness,
can be folded around your baby like a little cocoon,
stays more securely in place,
and can be quickly opened or closed while you’re out and about.
This means that safety and comfort can go hand in hand: your baby is strapped in properly and still lies soft and snug in a handmade blanket.
Have fun sewing your baby car seat kit!
A hug and see you soon!
