simple fabric pennant garland

lovely DIY decorations to sew yourself for indoors and outdoors - indispensable

I couldn't sew until about two years ago. I had always thought about taking it up, but somehow I didn't find enough motivation or time to really try and just get started. There were times when I had picked up a needle and thread to sew on a button or mend a small tear, but actually sewing something, creating something new, from cutting to finishing, seemed complicated, if fascinating.

When I was little, my mother would sew something for me from time to time, a carnival costume, a dress or a cushion with appliqués. I loved wearing the clothes I sewed myself. Becoming a mother myself gave me the final impetus to finally get my hands on my sewing machine, in the hope of being able to give my children similar pleasure later on. I liked the idea of having home-made clothes for the baby and decoration in the house. I have the predecessor model of this sewing machine. Just use the one you already have or borrow one from a friend or relative or buy the one you want.

In the end, after a few months of practice and a few enjoyable sewing evenings with friends who already had some sewing expertise, I learned to sew. Not that I would have become a seamstress, but at least I can now realize the ideas that come to my mind or sew some of the models you can find on the internet or in sewing magazines.

In this post, I'll tell you how I sewed this very simple fabric garland from fabric scraps, partly from a fabric store that sells remnants and partly from pieces left over from previous sewing projects.

You need:

This garland is ready in no time and is also great for the garden. If it shoots off quickly in the sun, you can simply cut a new garland next spring...

For the simple version of the pennant chain, use pinking shears to cut triangles from fabric scraps. Place the bias tape or seam tape around them and topstitch with a straight stitch. Done.

I like the embellishment effect and the festive atmosphere that these few triangles of fabric strung together create. It's as if they remind me that every day is also a bit of a celebration that we can be grateful for and enjoy.

I hope that you too want to bring a little joy of celebration into your home without waiting for a special occasion like a birthday. So - what are you waiting for? If you have sewn a garland, feel free to send me a photo or two. If you have any questions, feel free to write to me, I look forward to hearing from you. A hug and see you soon!
