DIY Record Lamp Shade – Creative Vinyl Upcycling with Vintage Charm

DIY Record Lamp Shade – Upcycling with Vintage Charm

Do you have old vinyl records at home that are no longer being played?

Perhaps they are sitting on a shelf, tucked away in the attic, or waiting in a box for a new purpose.

With this simple DIY project, they can become something entirely different: a vinyl record lamp shade that not only brings light into a room but also keeps a small piece of music history alive.

This project is easy to make and works beautifully in creative living spaces, teenagers’ rooms, music corners, reading nooks or any room with a touch of vintage charm.

Why Vinyl Records Are Perfect for Upcycling Projects

Vinyl is a surprisingly versatile material.

When heated, a record becomes soft and flexible, allowing it to be shaped into many different forms.

One of the most beautiful aspects of this project is that the characteristic grooves remain visible, giving the finished lamp shade its unmistakable look.

And every record carries its own story.

Materials for Your Vinyl Record Lamp Shade

You will need:

  • an old vinyl record

  • a lamp cord

  • optionally a fabric-covered cable in your favorite color

  • a (vintage-style) lamp socket

  • a large decorative vintage-style light bulb

  • a heatproof bowl, vase or mold

  • an oven

That is all you need for this project.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Choose Your Shape

First, decide what shape you would like your lamp shade to have. We used a small glass bowl that created a softly folded, slightly triangular shape.

Different molds will create completely different results.

2. Heat the Record

Place the vinyl record on your chosen mold and put it in the oven at approximately 75°C (167°F). Keep an eye on it throughout the process.

As the vinyl softens, it will slowly begin to drape itself over the form beneath it.

3. Let It Cool

Once the record has reached the desired shape, turn off the oven.

Allow the vinyl to cool slightly before removing the finished lamp shade.

4. Assemble the Lamp

The center hole of the record is perfect for the lamp socket.

Thread the lamp cord through the opening and attach the socket according to the manufacturer's instructions. The shade will naturally rest in place thanks to its own weight.

Creative Ways to Personalize Your Lamp Shade

One of the most enjoyable parts of this project is that every lamp shade can be unique.

You can decorate the record with:

  • geometric patterns

  • dots or lines

  • lettering or quotes

  • decorative ornaments

  • floral motifs

Acrylic paints work particularly well for this purpose. This turns every record into a one-of-a-kind piece.

Alternative Method: Shaping Vinyl Without an Oven

If you prefer not to use an oven, you can carefully heat the record with a hair dryer.

This method takes a little longer but gives you more control over specific areas.

With patience and a gentle touch, softened vinyl can even be cut or shaped further.

This allows you to create unusual designs such as:

  • flower shapes

  • star shapes

  • wavy edges

  • organic sculptural forms

The more experimental you are, the more unique your lamp shade becomes.

A Project That Shows How Transformative Materials Can Be

Perhaps this is one of the most beautiful things about upcycling. Something that has fulfilled its original purpose is given the opportunity to become something new.

A record becomes light.

Music becomes atmosphere.

And an object that may have been forgotten turns into a meaningful decorative piece with a story.

As the vinyl slowly changes shape, it becomes a reminder of how much potential often hides in the things we almost let go of.

When Warmth Changes Things

As I watched the record slowly soften in the oven and begin to change its shape, it made me think of something.

Warmth has a wonderful way of making things more flexible.

Not only vinyl.

We know this feeling ourselves. After a warm bath, with a hot water bottle nearby, or wrapped in a soft blanket, not only our muscles relax – sometimes our thoughts become a little gentler too.

There is something comforting about watching a rigid material soften and take on a new form.

As the record slowly drapes itself over the bowl, everything seems to slow down for a moment as well. Perhaps with a cup of tea nearby, perhaps with music playing softly in the background, or simply while watching the quiet transformation unfold.

Many DIY projects are not only about the finished result, but also about those calm moments in between.
