A simple sewing project for everyday life – neat, reusable and perfect for on-the-go moments

Wet wipes are part of daily life with children. In the stroller, in the diaper bag, in the car or quickly tucked into a handbag – they’re always nearby. Practical, yes. But the plastic packaging often looks worn out quickly and doesn’t feel especially beautiful.
That’s where this simple project comes in: a DIY wet wipes cover that is both functional and gently aesthetic.
It protects the package, keeps everything neat inside your bag and can easily be removed and washed whenever needed. And it’s a quick sewing project – perfect for a calm afternoon.
Why Sewing a Wet Wipes Cover Makes Sense
A handmade cover offers several advantages:
The wet wipes stay better protected.
The packaging tears less easily.
Your bag looks more organized.
You can choose fabrics that suit you and your daily rhythm.
You’ll feel happy when you hold the pretty, lovingly made cover in your hands.
Especially when you’re out and about, it’s often the small details that make the biggest difference.
Materials for Your DIY Wet Wipes Cover
You will need:
outer fabric (e.g. cotton or linen, optionally coated)
lining fabric (cotton works well)
optional lightweight interfacing for structure
sewing machine
matching thread
fabric scissors
disappearing fabric marker or tailor’s chalk
clips or pins
Choose fabrics that feel pleasant while being durable enough for everyday use.
Measurements and Cutting
Measure your wet wipes pack. Cut two rectangles (outer and lining fabric), each slightly larger than the pack so it fits comfortably:
(length of the wipes pack + 3 cm) × (2.3 × width of the pack)
Choose colors and patterns intentionally – ones that make you happy.
If you’re using interfacing, cut it to the same size and fuse it to the wrong side of the outer fabric.
Step by Step: Sewing the Wet Wipes Cover
1. Prepare the Fabric
Place the outer and lining fabrics right sides together. If using interfacing, it should already be fused to the wrong side of the outer fabric.
2. Prepare the Opening
Trace the size of the wipes pack flap onto a piece of paper and use it as a template. Place it centered on the fabric strip and outline it using your fabric marker (see first photo).
3. Sew the Opening
Sew along the oval marking, stitching the two fabric layers right sides together using a straight stitch.
Cut out the inside of the oval and carefully clip into the seam allowance all around so the curve lays flat after turning (see second photo).
4. Turn and Iron
Turn the fabric right side out through the opening. Press the edges neatly with an iron to shape the curve.
5. Sew the Side Seams
Fold the short edges of the rectangle right sides together (see third photo) and sew them with a straight stitch. Finish the raw edges if desired.
6. Iron Again
Turn everything right side out and iron once more. At this point, the final shape becomes visible (see fourth photo).
7. Close the Cover
Fold the narrower ends of the rectangle inward so they match the width of your wet wipes pack and overlap by at least 5 cm.
Sew the overlapping edges together with a small seam allowance (see fifth photo).
8. French Seam Finish
To make the cover reversible and prevent raw edges from showing, sew a French seam at this point:
Turn the cover inside out again and stitch both sides (the seams from step 7) once more from the opposite side with a straight stitch.
This encloses the raw seam allowance inside the new seam, allowing both sides of your cover to be used beautifully (see sixth photo).
In the final three photos, you can see the finished wet wipes cover:

Small Variations and Thoughtful Details
A simple topstitch adds stability.
A small label or delicate embroidery makes it more personal.
For travel, coated cotton works especially well.
Decorative stitching, embroidery, sewn-on buttons or a playful iron-on motif can give your cover personality.
It truly doesn’t take much to make something ordinary feel special.
A Quiet Everyday Project with Mindfulness
A DIY wet wipes cover isn’t a big project. And perhaps that is exactly why it’s valuable. It accompanies you through ordinary days – at playgrounds, cafés, on trips.
Sometimes it’s not the big things, but the thoughtfully made small solutions that make everyday life easier. I firmly believe that it is immediately noticeable when love has been put into something – that this “stored” love makes a difference and can sweeten our lives.
One way to bring mindfulness into everyday life with children is through DIY projects or thoughtfully designed everyday objects. Sewing a wipes cover is a beautiful opportunity to invite more mindfulness into your routine.
The mindful act of sewing is one part – but the lovingly made cover can do even more. Each time you clean little hands or faces, it can remind you to pause, to be fully present, and to feel the care and love you poured into creating it. After all, wiping children’s fingers and noses is itself an act of tenderness and care – something children can feel deeply.

Enjoy sewing!
A hug and see you soon!
