How I created a reversible DIY baby nest from delicate grey and white cotton fabric — with a removable mattress, a soft ruffle drawstring, a tiny leather heart and a border that can later become a bed snake.

To sew your own baby nest feels very different from simply buying one.

The Ruffle Is Also a Drawstring Tunnel

The ruffle around the border is one of my favorite details.

It looks tender and sweet, almost like a soft little frame. But at the same time, it is not only decoration. It has a function: it works as a drawstring tunnel. Through this tunnel, the bottom of the baby nest can be pulled together and tied. When the baby grows, it can be opened so that the little feet have more room.

My Design: Soft Grey and White with a Tiny Leather Heart

As a small detail, I added a little leather heart.

With decorative details for babies, however, one thing is very important to me: they must be attached extremely securely. Small parts must not be able to come loose. If you are unsure, it is better to leave such details out. Beauty may be there. But safety always comes first.

As soft and loving as a baby nest may look, for me it is a piece for awake, supervised moments.

For placing the baby near you.

For short cuddle pauses.

For looking at.

For closeness in everyday life.

For unsupervised sleep, babies should always sleep according to current safe sleep recommendations: on their back, on a firm, flat sleep surface, without loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys or soft nests in the crib. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a firm, non-inclined sleep surface and keeping soft objects and loose bedding out of the sleep space; German BZgA guidance also recommends a firm, flat mattress and avoiding padded bed borders or nests.

That may sound less romantic than a soft little nest. But it matters. Beauty may always walk together with mindfulness.

For a similar project, you may need:

cotton fabric for the front and back
cotton fabric for the removable mattress
filling or suitable batting for the border
batting or a padded insert for the mattress
a long strip of fabric for the ruffle and drawstring tunnel
cord or ribbon for tying the nest together
matching thread
a small leather heart as decoration, optional and securely attached

When choosing fabric, I would always look for something that feels pleasant and washes well. A baby nest is not meant to be admired from far away. It is meant to be held, folded, washed, used and loved.
