Washable, easy to remove, and ready for all the crumbs that gather during everyday car rides
As parents, we know how important it is to keep our children safe in the car. A good car seat is essential. What we sometimes forget is how much daily life leaves its marks: crumbs, stains, spilled drinks and all the small adventures that happen between home and destination.
That’s why I sewed a simple solution: a DIY car seat cover for kids.It protects the seat from dirt, feels soft instead of plasticky on bare legs, and most importantly – you can remove it anytime, shake it out and wash it.
Why a car seat cover is so practical
This project is simple, but it makes everyday life easier:
The car seat stays cleaner for longer.
Small accidents are easier to handle without deep-cleaning the entire seat.
The fabric feels more comfortable, especially in summer when children wear lighter clothes.
You can choose colors and fabrics that fit your family’s style – practical and personal at the same time.
Materials You’ll Need
You only need a few things:
a piece of durable fabric, large enough to cover both the seat and backrest(I used muslin fabric – soft, breathable and gentle on children’s skin)
optional (for thinner fabrics): a sturdy cotton fabric for reinforcement on the back
sewing machine
matching thread
fusible interfacing (especially for reinforcing the seat belt openings)
optional: a small label or iron-on design
scissors, measuring tape, clips or pins, fabric marker
Step by Step: Sewing a DIY Car Seat Cover
1. Measure the car seat and cut the fabric
Measure your child’s car seat and cut a rectangular piece of fabric large enough to cover both the seat and the backrest. Leave a little extra on all sides so the cover can drape naturally.
Tip: It’s easier to trim excess fabric later than to add more.
2. Mark and reinforce the seat belt openings
Mark where the harness straps need to pass through the fabric.Iron fusible interfacing onto the wrong side of the fabric in these areas to stabilize them and prevent tearing.
3. Optional: Reinforce the seat area
If your fabric is thin or very soft, you can reinforce the center area where most pressure occurs.
Cut a matching rectangle from sturdy cotton fabric.
Hem the edges neatly (mitered corners work beautifully here like in the post "self-sewn muslin cloths").
Attach it to the back of the main fabric using double-sided fusible interfacing.
Stitch around the edges to secure it.
This adds durability without making the cover bulky.
4. Hem the outer edges
Fold and sew the outer edges of the cover to create a clean finish and prevent fraying. Mitered corners give the piece a tidy and long-lasting result.
5. Sew the harness openings
Sew a narrow rectangle around each marked opening using a tight zigzag stitch (similar to making a buttonhole). Carefully cut open the fabric inside the stitched area without cutting the seams.
Important: The exact position of the harness openings varies depending on the car seat model. Measure carefully so the cover lies smoothly without pulling.
6. Optional: Add elastic or a drawstring
In my version, I decided not to add elastic or a drawstring. The harness straps usually hold the cover in place well enough, and I like being able to lift it easily when cleaning.
However, if your seat shape requires it, you can sew elastic into the sides or add a small drawstring casing.
7. Optional: Add a small decorative detail
You can sew on a small label or iron on a simple design if you like. Not because it’s necessary – but because small details often bring quiet joy.
Ready for Everyday Adventures
Place the finished cover over the car seat and pull the harness straps through the openings.
Now your child’s car seat is ready for every snack, every outing and every small adventure along the way.
And when crumbs inevitably appear – simply remove the cover, shake it out and wash it. Practical, simple and made with care.
